So there we were in late January with an available recording slot to fill. I decided to go ahead with an idea that I have been fostering for a couple of years and that David Chesky encouraged me to go ahead and do (After all, I did get my Ph.D. in composition from UCLA). So here's the concept…take a very well known classical work and re-cast it as a piece in the style of electronica. But that's not all. Have some of my favorite musicians realize the concept acoustically and in realtime…basically jam on the "changes" of the Moonlight Sonata of Beethoven for an hour and capture it on high-definition audio and high-definition video. It turned out great! It's a hybrid piece with great solos, pulsing rhythms and incredible instrumental color.

The AIX All Star Band is comprised of my favorite LA studio musicians. They bring their amazing talents to the hall have some brief discussions and then launch into an uninterrupted 55 minute jam. It's mind-blowing how good they are. Carl is the guitarist for Supertramp and a fronts his own trio, ex-Wings guitarist Laurence Juber is always at the top of acoustic guitarists polls and music director and keyboard maestro Jim Cox has a discogrpahy that spans many, many pages.

It turned out so well that we've done two additional classical masterpieces in the same style: Pachelbel’s Canon and Bach’s Goldberg Variations. If you like what you hear on this recording, you'll like those as well. The ensemble is essentially the same and the same improvisational masterery is focal point of the track.

In the middle of the production it occurred to me to turn the video of the musicians into a moving, evolving piece of motion graphics by processing or filtering [heavily] the HD video that we shot. Lots of computer graphics get created to accompany a piece of music but how many times is the video a direct derivative of the performance itself. I call this the "wallpaper" version of the piece. I'd love to hear from customers about this presentation…I spent another 6 weeks realizing it.

First recorded in 1972 for the BBC, Deep Purple in concert was not released until 1980 and what a release! This is Deep Purple at the top of their game. To make this collection even more spectacular, two of Deep Purple's biggest hits have been added as bonus tracks. In 1968, Hush hit the American charts and climbed to #4. In 1969, River Deep Mountain High reached #53 on the Billboard charts. On River Deep Mountain High the band remained faithful to Phil Spector’s “wall of sound”. ...2L’s 5.1surround recording re-creates both the spacious ambience of Bergen Cathedral and the power of its majestic organ in one’s listening room with astonishing fidelity. It is to be hoped that 2L will record further organ music in this excellent venue. My only complaint is that the playing time of this SACD is under 37 minutes, as I would have loved to have heard much more from the talented Iver Kleive reproduced in such breathtaking sound quality.

This CD contains original organmusic, this music supports the very powerful movie deUsynlige (troubled waters).

Although it is very difficult for this type of music to survive without a church or movietheatre, this CD is a pleasure to listen. It takes a harsh mind not to drift away in thoughts while listening to this release.

The organ music is in a sense one of the main characters in the motion picture TROUBLED WATER. Possessing a distinct personality and playing a unique role the music interacts with the drama and influences the other characters. Working on the script brought me to Iver Kleive. His experience in church music and the influence of jazz was a perfect match for the characters. Recording Simon & Garfunkel’s "Bridge over Troubled Waters" in Bergen Cathedral left a powerful and lasting impression on me. Erik Poppe, director

Troubled Water has already won two of Norway's official film awards for 2007 (it was nominated for six), as well as walking away with the Audience Award at the 2008 Hamptons International Film Festival -- which I find a little surprising. Audience awards almost always go to feel-good movies (even sometimes to good feel-good movies) but Troubled Water is too complicated a film to fit easily into that category...

Organ music is also a highlight of the film (one character is particularly adept at it and we hear a lovely organ rendition of "Bridge Over Troubled Water"). The cast of a half-dozen lead players (two of which are shown above and two more below) and as many again in supporting roles is -- to a man, woman and child -- excellent... guru.greencine.com

The most well-known Polish band in the Seventies! SBB contains a rich variety of influences, which include symphonic prog with intricate and fully orchestrated arrangements. The acoustic guitar adds a very interesting texture. Beauty of the keyboard parts, romantic sonorities of the piano parts and careful, aerial vocal parts brought this group close to PINK FLOYD, CAMEL or GENESIS. Some of their albums were released in West Germany and Czechoslovakia, and they are now active again. "Follow My Dream" and "Welcome" are probably their two best.

Biography

1.SBB is a legend. They started in 1971; then for two years they performed with Czeslaw Niemen (in the band Niemen). Eventually in 1974 the name was shortened to SBB (Search, Break, Build). Since 1974, Jozef Skrzek, Apostolis Antymos and Jerzy Piotrowski have recorded several albums in Poland and abroad and they played hundreds of gigs all around Europe, sharing the stages with such artists as Bob Marley (with whom they co-headlined Roskilde Festival in 1978), Elton John, Soft Machine, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Charles Mingus Dynasty, Jack Bruce Group, Thin Lizzy, Canned Heat, Omega or Klaus Szultze. In the beginning of the 90s they returned after 10-year silence and played series of concerts in USA.
In 2000, drums in SBB were taken over by Paul Wertico. Considered one of the best drummers in the world, for the last 18 years he'd played in Pat Metheny Group, appearing on: First Circle, The Falcon and the Snowman, Still Life Talking, Letter from Home, Secret Story, The Road To You, We Live Here, Quartet, Imaginary Day. The band continues to play in this line-up to this day.
Fascinated by Mahavishnu Orchestra, SBB started searching for their own means of musical expression. As the time passed, the music calmed down, and the improvised, Hendrix-like moments were more and more often contrasted by softened compositions. Their style evolved into kind of progressive rock, in which one could hear influences of classical music as well as jazz-rock instrumental frenzy.
2. SBB came into being in 1971 as Silesian Blues Band founded by Jozef Skrzek. (Skrzek was classicaly educated as a pianist but by the time of Silesian Blues Band he was a bassist renowned for his work with Breakout, the famous (in Poland, of course) Polish blues group.) The other members of the band were Jerzy Piotrowski (drums) and Apostolis Antymos (guitar). The trio made some radio recordings but it was very hard for them to break through into the Polish musical market. However, they were noticed by Czeslaw Niemen. (Nieman was sort of "king" of Polish rock. He became extremely famous in Poland in 60's, when he was performing pop and soul songs. In early 70's he turned to the experimental, progressive music balancing on the edge of rock and jazz. I can heartily recommend his 70's stuff. It is a truly progressive and original music). As a result, they joined him in the NIEMEN group, taking part in his artistic explorations and making music, which can be best described as 'impressionistic' and 'aleatoric' . Together they recorded Requiem dla Van Gogha (Requiem for Van Gogh) and Marionetki (Puppets), two records with truly unforgettable music. Influenced as much by Elvin Jones, Roy Haynes or Art Blakey as by Ginger Baker, Mitch Mitchell or Keith Moon, Paul Wertico is an all-around drummer who built his reputation as a colorist with Pat Metheny. Although Wertico learned to play the snare drum in grade school, he is self-taught on the drum kit. By age 15, he was already playing professionally with various rock and jazz bands and later his role as a star soloist with the Cary-Grove High School Band led to a music scholarship. In the early '70s, he left college and soon became a fixture of the Chicago music scene, playing and recording with a multitude of diverse artists including jazz saxophonist Joe Daley, ethnomusicologist Paul Berliner, blues-rock vocalist/guitarist Ellen McIlwaine, folk singer Terry Callier and the fusion-based imon & Bard Group. Always active in various realms of creative music, he most notably started two cooperative bands: Earwax Control with multi-instrumentalist Jeff Czech and keyboardist Gordon James, and Spontaneous Composition with multi-reed player Rich Corpolongo and bassist Doug Lofstrom. In 1983, Wertico replaced Danny Gottlieb in the Pat Metheny Group. A long and fruitful collaboration, including ten recordings, seven Grammy Awards and several gold records, ensued. Wertico left the group in 2001. During his tenure with the guitarist, he nurtured several of his own projects that would end up gaining exposure in the ‘90s. He also continued recording with many other artists including new age music pioneer Paul Winter, "word jazz" creator Ken Nordine, rock-fusion violinist Jerry Goodman and jazz vocalist Kurt Elling. In 1993, he recorded his first disc as a leader, The Yin And The Yout, featuring a legion of guest stars. Later, he went on to form the highly democratic Union Trio with pianist Laurence Hobgood and bassist Brian Torff, as well as releasing a drum duo recording with fellow percussionist Gregg Bendian. He also led various other combos, most notably the Paul Wertico Trio, a band that helped redefine fusion and includes guitarist John Moulder and bassist Eric Hochberg. Soon after leaving Metheny, Wertico joined a trio led by another prominent guitarist, Larry Coryell, and also became a member of the legendary Eastern European rock band, SBB. The most well-known Polish band in the Seventies! SBB contains a rich variety of influences, which include symphonic prog with intricate and fully orchestrated arrangements. The acoustic guitar adds a very interesting texture. Beauty of the keyboard parts, romantic sonorities of the piano parts and careful, aerial vocal parts brought this group close to PINK FLOYD, CAMEL or GENESIS. Some of their albums were released in West Germany and Czechoslovakia, and they are now active again. "Follow My Dream" and "Welcome" are probably their two best.

Biography:

1.SBB is a legend. They started in 1971; then for two years they performed with Czeslaw Niemen (in the band Niemen). Eventually in 1974 the name was shortened to SBB (Search, Break, Build). Since 1974, Jozef Skrzek, Apostolis Antymos and Jerzy Piotrowski have recorded several albums in Poland and abroad and they played hundreds of gigs all around Europe, sharing the stages with such artists as Bob Marley (with whom they co-headlined Roskilde Festival in 1978), Elton John, Soft Machine, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Charles Mingus Dynasty, Jack Bruce Group, Thin Lizzy, Canned Heat, Omega or Klaus Szultze. In the beginning of the 90s they returned after 10-year silence and played series of concerts in USA.

In 2000, drums in SBB were taken over by Paul Wertico. Considered one of the best drummers in the world, for the last 18 years he'd played in Pat Metheny Group, appearing on: First Circle, The Falcon and the Snowman, Still Life Talking, Letter from Home, Secret Story, The Road To You, We Live Here, Quartet, Imaginary Day. The band continues to play in this line-up to this day.

Fascinated by Mahavishnu Orchestra, SBB started searching for their own means of musical expression. As the time passed, the music calmed down, and the improvised, Hendrix-like moments were more and more often contrasted by softened compositions. Their style evolved into kind of progressive rock, in which one could hear influences of classical music as well as jazz-rock instrumental frenzy.

2. SBB came into being in 1971 as Silesian Blues Band founded by Jozef Skrzek. (Skrzek was classicaly educated as a pianist but by the time of Silesian Blues Band he was a bassist renowned for his work with Breakout, the famous (in Poland, of course) Polish blues group.) The other members of the band were Jerzy Piotrowski (drums) and Apostolis Antymos (guitar). The trio made some radio recordings but it was very hard for them to break through into the Polish musical market. However, they were noticed by Czeslaw Niemen. (Nieman was sort of "king" of Polish rock. He became extremely famous in Poland in 60's, when he was performing pop and soul songs. In early 70's he turned to the experimental, progressive music balancing on the edge of rock and jazz. I can heartily recommend his 70's stuff. It is a truly progressive and original music). As a result, they joined him in the NIEMEN group, taking part in his artistic explorations and making music, which can be best described as 'impressionistic' and 'aleatoric' . Together they recorded Requiem dla Van Gogha (Requiem for Van Gogh) and Marionetki (Puppets), two records with truly unforgettable music. In 1974 they parted with Niemen and begin to play on their own

Unique in full meaning of the word. World class musicianship. New breath in 1998/99 Absolutely Life, younger bloodstream in the the music and band. Do not miss out the concert of SBB. The best line up was: Piotrowski, Skrzek, Apostolis, Rusek. Second best line up was Skrzek, Muzykant, Apostolis. But luck of bass guitar hinder the foundation of their music. But, still worth its weight in Gold!

An extremely inspired album. Very guitar oriented in the Mahavishnu-era, McLaughlin vein. Apostolis rules here and for a good reason, he is fantastic and this is my favourite recording by SBB. The distorted, often off-key, staccato guitar comes off convincingly - he is one of the masters of that - and there is a strong cohesion between the tracks. Pity, they declare at the beginning of the concert that it's a one-off that they'll never repeat.....
Kind of symphonic rock, lending itself to much room for heartfelt improvisations.The compositions are very good and original and when I listen to the CD I often have to listen to it again, even for the third time. It grows on one. Very satisfying. Even with the odd moment of lull, it's still a desert island CD for me. They play with much joy and the trio creates a "wall of sound" which is truly amazing, considering the instruments available at that time. In spite of the guitar taking a prominent place - which is atypical to this extent - the soaring keyboards are very well represented, too. Thankfully, the somewhat overindulgent vocals on other releases are kept to a minimum here....
I've seen them performing live a few times and it was always the highlight of that period in my life Their offering - whilst often pleasing - is best measured by something of this album. It's full of raw passion, one of a kind. Don't miss it!

SBB has always been much better at live recordings than at painstaking mixes at the studio. They represented a "quiet revolution" behind the Iron Curtain, practically the only band that went well beyond the thinly veiled message in words, but more like a musical revolution! Few bands got away with largely improvised music there, SBB is one of the noteable exceptions. (They come from Poland.) They also established a genre in improvised trio performance and - naturally - followers. (The first incarnation of the Hungarian band EAST was one of them, but their album releases with forever changing line-up would not stand up to that anymore.)
The concert was sensational - at that time and I was one in the audience! Hearing it again some 25 years later it didn't grab me first. Why? They have better stuff, that I am more enthused about. Still, a second listen delivered more pleasure and the third one is definitely confirming that it's something I wouldn't want to be without.
This trio delivers a powerhouse in performance, their live recordings often went beyond two hours of non-stop improvisations. Using relatively unsophisticated equipments, they worked even harder to bring out the most of the scarce resources. In the performance there are elements of ELP, Mahavishnu - also a drum solo that's worthy of Billy Cobham's envy... - and most importantly SBB - without copying their peers...
Budai Ifjusagi Park ( which means "Youth Park of Buda" in Hungary, Budapest) has been an open air concert venue under the romantic surrounds of the Old Castle. SBB visited there every year in my youth. It was always an event to look forward to.
This performance is worthy of your progressive attention, largely improvised with little vocals, all three performers are brilliant and can play in any genre to satisfaction. Here, the bandleader Josef Skrsek rules on keyboards, bass, harmonica and the odd vocals, leaving the absolutely exceptional guitar player Anthymos Apostolis to do quiet credible fills. Now, that guy is one of a kind and I implore you to hear his dominant performance on SBB - "Karlstad", another live performance by the band. There, he plays dissonant chords and solos that I don't hear from any other guitar player - ever. So, hop on your mail-order site and get it while you can. Still, this album is also worthy of one's attention - they don't play music like this anymore!!! Get it, too!.

07. Follow My Dream (1977)

This is a great album... it consists in two very long tracks, but beautifully made. almost instrumental, it has a very fluid but complex sound, with lots of different combinations of keyboard sounds and atmospheres, typically from the seventies, always changing and each time bringing new delightfull harmonies. Sometimes, there are some calm vocal parts from Skzrek, in polish, adding a dreamy atmosphere to the music. The guitar in this album is rare, at least as a lead instrument, but when Apostolis plays, he can grab all the attentions to his notes, which proves that is a discreet but a top notch guitar player. This is an essencial album, highly recommended, with a sound totally different from other bands, including polish bands. Excelent!

Late 70's were no good to the Silesian Blues Band (SBB). From magnificent jazz-rock / symphonic prog albums really outstanding, the Polish band simplified their sound in some albums like this, also known as "Amiga" in which the listener will find some really nice tracks such as "Hektik", "Kala", "Mutraczka" and "Ouzo", all of them a bit closer of the musical gems of this band but still far from the better that you could listen from SBB...

Last before SBB break-up, this is definitive SBB album, and some says it may be definitive even for whole prog-rock. Talking about style, it may be compared with UK/Danger Money, but in my. opinion this one is much more fascinating and original. This album has incredible diverse sound, broading from orchestral through jazz-rock to blues, and every piece has its own climate (e.g . "Strategy of Pulse", which refers in some parts to early, Mahavishnu-influenced SBB, or "The Triangle of Joy" with mediterranean glimpses) , coparing with previous jazz-rock and electronic shaded SBB releases this one is more in symphonic-rock direction. Also more guitar-oriented than the predecessors, but with guitar in the best art-rock style. Additional guitarist (Slavomir Piwowar) gives more freedom for Anthimos virtuoso playing, and there we have beautiful acoustic (charming "The triangle of Joy","Memento with a banal Tryptych" ) and electric guitar work (soaring solos on "My Land of Dreams", "Triangle of Joy" and the title track, all of them considered by many as one of the best in rock), along with some dynamic riffs. Skrzek's keyboard and bass playing is as always, more than excellent, and Piotrowski on drums is a class for his own. Unfortunately, this is less known than "western" Welcome and Follow My Dream albums. Absolutely must-have

This must be one of the best - if not THE BEST - live albums released by a group from Poland and in Poland we have plenty of fantastic bands from the progressive genre but none of them even got close to this live masterpiece album. Recorded in Student's Club Stodoła (The Barn) this album is packed with awe-inspiring guitar solos, guitar-bass duels and hypnotic drums playing. The backbone of this gig are the improvisations which are nicely built around several short compositions and give the feeling of one giant flowing piece of music. The compositions on this debut SBB album are so significant that the band was coming back to them during the next three decades as performing and recording ensemble. This album can easily be put on a shelf with giants like Made In Japan or The Song Remains The Same and to be frank, for me this SBB album is the winner among any other live album ever recorded. Hats off.

It really IS a masterpiece, and IMHO their best album, ex aequo with "Pamiec". Raw, progressive, fusion improvisations, heavy (sometimes they sound like early Sabbath) riffs, psychedelic guitar, incredibly thick drum parts and whirling moogs perfectly compiled with gentle piano parts by Jуzef Skrzek. The general sound of the album reminds me of ELP's early tracks, such as "Tank", "Take a pebble", "Trilogy" etc.
The reason why I didn't give 'em five stars is the somewhat irritating melo-recitation track "Ballda o 5 glodnych", probably inspired by The Doors' "Horse Lattitudes". Well, one might like it. Personally, I'm not sure... The track causes a particularly negative thing to an album, which, in spite of the fact that is compilled of five or six single tracks with their own, autonomic structure, sounds as a one, long, half-improvised piece of music, an endless river of sound, which, somewhere in the middle of the cd, breaks to reveal a mixture psychedelically chaotic noises, whispers and screams (even if the poem is quite good)

A warning. This album has the power to grow on one after repeated listening. Three long tunes with beautiful vocal melodies and skillful instrumental passages offer symphonic rock at it's best. The drummer Jerzy Piotrowski deserves special mention again. Here, he creates exceptionally pleasing grooves that are one of a kind. The vocals are perhaps the best I've ever heard from Josef Skrzek on any SBB release. Not a second of his usually indulgent and often boring style here, but heartfelt and haunting melodies. Truly elevating. Apostolis, whose very unique and sensational "staccato" approach to the guitar is simply worth living for takes a back seat here, allowing the melodies to dominate. What a gentleman! (You'll have to get "Karlstad" to hear him in his element.)
OK, so why not 5 stars? SBB is prone to indulge in spacey soundscapes that in musical terms offer little interest. All of the tracks here take a while before they get going, requiring the listener's patience. Still, it's well worth persevering, very close to 5 stars

SBB are architects of an irresistable cosmic prog sound, as long as you pick up the key albums from the '70s. 'Pamiec' is one of their best.
Even though SBB's music isn't extremely complicated or difficult doesn't make them any less captivating to even the most demanding ears. The dramatic qualities and the patience they exercise in building their songs are wonderful elements of their style. 'Pamiec' consists of three lengthy songs, each a fine representation of the band's style: jazzy, cosmic, synth-dominant, dramatic, it's all here, with occasional flurries of kinetic storms from drummer Jerzy Piotrowski and generally unpredictable dynamics. Mainman and bassist/keyboardist/vocalist Jozef Skrzek is cleary the guiding light, though he gives the other members plenty of room to move around. His vocals are full of conviction, sometimes fragile, sometimes triumphant, usually carrying a kind of lamenting/melancholy tone.
Some moments are crushingly beautiful ("From Whose Blood My Blood") and some are frightening in their dynamic range (the side-long "Memory Grows Into Stone"). The sounds are all an analog-loving synth-enthusiast could ask for, but it's so much more than just a showcase for Skrzek, as his compositions shine brightly throughout this eventful album, and the band chemistry reaches peak points all over the place. The instrumental balance is another highlight, guitar given plenty of presence amidst the other sounds, nothing ever battling for the spotlight, all of it working toward the strength of the song. Perhaps I should give this a 5, but I'll hold back since I'm not familiar enough with SBB's daunting catalog...maybe there's another masterpiece out there more worthy of that rating. So, 4.5++. But who cares about numbers: this is an album any enthusiast of prog's grand '70s era must own.

These instrumental performances by guitarist Lex Vandyke concentrate on guitar interpretations of Latin-American tunes and songs. The relationship between Latin America and the guitar is a long-standing and important one: the instrument came to Latin America with the Spanish conquerors and, when mixed with other musical elements notably those of African origin became crucial to many of the major styles of Latin music. Given the guitar's roots both in North American Arab culture, and in the ancient music of Egypt (as well the persistence of its relatives in sub-Saharan African cultures), there may be no coincidence in the fact that the music of West African slaves and Spanish folk and classical guitar styles mingled in such exciting and productive ways in the Latin-music favorites featured on this collection.

Yes, Finally! A Opus 3 album that actually is fun listening to!
All my Opus 3 albums sounds great but this is the first one that allso have a musical content which don't make me bored after just a few tracks. The first time I listened to this album I was really surprised, this was more than I hoped for. Of course knowing that Opus 3 made a rock album made me really curios, but since this is experimential rock completly without song I was not sure what to excpect.
The musical content really surpised me, but the sound quality was exactly as high as I excpected, I can't think of any complains regarding sound quality. The surround mix is 4.1 (no center speaker as usual with opus 3 surround sacd's), the mix is very careful with the surround speakers used for ambience only. At first I didn't see the point of making a surround mix if the rear spekears is barely used, but now I actually enjoy these mixes (but Dark side of the moon will continue to be my absolute favorite sacd!).
I had the privelige of buying this album directly from the man behind opus 3, Jan-Erik Persson, and he said he allso really likes this type of rock and blues, so he promised more albums of this kind. Looking forward to it!

Very good album with a very good sound. I listen to Stereo sound. I had never heard about this artist before I bought this album. It was an adventure - purchasing but it was worthwile. It's a fancy, natural music which is never boring. A good mix of modern instrumental Blues, Rock and Folk. For me it is a perfect album with a very good sound of an outstanding guitarist. I love it!

I like to sample music and then take chances. Opus 3 has a great reputation for making great recordings and this disc is no exception.
This is a pure dsd recording of a Swedish guitarist and his band. And what a good band it is. Mixing rock, blues and jazz with a taste of folk and blue grass......we get both a great performance and a wonderful recording.
The sound is life-like, warm and realistic. It was recorded with a tubed microphone and the sound is lush and deep.
Great guitar licks with every other instrument that can be imagined mixed into certain songs. All recorded wonderfully.
Its the different combinations of instruments that keeps this disc fresh and exciting. Mr. Ugglas can really play guitar too. The bassist is using the stand up variety if you can dig it. Ugglas is essentially a rock and roll guy and obviously loves guitar....both electric and acoustic. And the spring board for every song on this album is either rock, blues or folk in character.
One track features bluesy guitar work recorded in a church with an organist. Now this is a cool concept. Another slow rocker has trombone in the song if you can imagine this. Ugglas and band manage to switch things up and around so as to keep the entire album interesting...almost nostalgic and sentimental. Like time is passing.
Terrific solos from Ugglas.
From start to finish this is a great album and a beautiful sacd. I cant think of anyone not liking the sound of this disc.
Highly recommended.

Sounds really sweet especially when considering the age of the source. I'd never owned any original Kottke stuff but had heard many covers by Michael Hedges and others. Acoustic guitar in many styles is one of my music mainstays but I find this a little too spastic to sit and listen to this whole disc. He can sure play the hell out of any guitar but almost every song on this disc is extremely fast and complex and you really have to like his use of a bottleneck slide too...I'm not sure I do. In short, the pieces he plays on this are like a race to show off his skills.
A great disc but but be ready to race!

6- and 12-String Guitar is the second album by Leo Kottke, a solo instrumental steel-string acoustic guitar album originally released by John Fahey's Takoma Records in 1969. It is popularly known as the Armadillo album after the animal illustrated in the distinctive cover art (by Annie Elliott). Although Kottke has recorded dozens of additional albums, 6- and 12-String Guitar remains Kottke's best-known album.
The album showcases Kottke's early, hard-driving polyphonic finger-picking style (which eventually led to him developing tendinitis and having to change his playing approach). Even at the fastest tempos the notes are clean and crisp, with a distinctive tone. True to its title, the album contains performances on both 6- and 12-string acoustic guitars, some using a slide.
Although Kottke has included vocals in other albums, this album is all instrumental — the liner notes contained Kottke's famous apology that his voice "sounds like geese farts on a muggy day."
All the tracks were written by Kottke except Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, Kottke's arrangement of the familiar Bach piece.
Recorded in just three and one-half hours, the release of this truly iconic album virtually launched Leo Kottke out beyond the St. Paul-Minneapolis confines where he had been ensconced as a local phenom. By jumping on board John Fahey's burgeoning Takoma label, Kottke's guitar wizardry (especially finger-picking a 12-string, usually reserved as rhythm accompaniment) gave other guitarists far and wide, second thoughts. Throw in some sassy slide work on both 6 & 12 and you'll know why this particular record is commonly referred to as an Intro to Guitar 101. With twelve original compositions plus a few by some guy named J.S. Bach, Kottke's blues, folk, country and classical channelings dictate both his playful and reflective approach on each. Highlights include blazing picking techniques on Broken Bicycle and Vaseline Machine Gun with some muscular bottleneck slide work on The Sailor's Grave On The Prairie

With the 1969 release of 6-AND 12 STRING GUITAR, Leo Kottke established his pre-eminence as a guitar virtuoso and composer of quirky, pop-inflected pieces. Harmonically adventurous and technically dazzling, this album showcases Kottke's penchant for infusing traditional elements of folk guitar with more modern, even impressionistic harmony and tonality. Kottke inspired a revolution in acoustic guitar playing, and this record provided the opening volley.

"The Driving of the Year Nail" starts things off with a relentless fingerpicked chug, featuring splashes of open harmonics executed with the delicacy of a ballerina. Kottke proceeds to combine the familiar with the strange--each of these brief pieces (around three minutes and under) has the effect of being simultaneously charming, and a little twisted. For example, "Vaseline Machine Gun" starts with "Taps" played with a bottleneck slide, then morphs into a thumb-and-slide frenzy. Bach's "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" is the exception, given a straight and loving reading on six-string guitar. This is pure steel-string joy, with liberal doses of irony and ecstasy

Traffic was a rock band from Birmingham, England, in the late 1960s and led by Steve Winwood, with Jim Capaldi, Chris Wood and Dave Mason, after Winwood left the Spencer Davis Group.

The four musicians often played at a club called The Elbow Room in Aston which is where the name 'Traffic' was conceived after observing passing cars. With Mason and Capaldi eager to form a new group, Winwood agreed to join the partnership along with Chris Wood and so the four members retreated to a secluded cottage in Aston Tirrold, Berkshire to rehearse and record their early work.

Their debut single was 1967's "Paper Sun", a UK hit. "Hole in My Shoe", the second single, was an even bigger hit, and set the stage for a rivalry between Winwood and Mason, the group's principal songwriters. Their debut album was Mr. Fantasy which, like the singles, was a hit in the UK but not in the US or elsewhere. Their second album, Traffic, was released in 1968. The band began touring the US, but Mason was fired and Winwood announced the band's break-up. Winwood formed Blind Faith but after that band split in 1969 he began working on a solo recording which eventually turned into another Traffic album, John Barleycorn Must Die, their most successful album yet.

After some personnel changes (including the return of Mason), Traffic released The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys, an American hit that didn't chart in the UK. Once again, personnel problems wracked the band as Capaldi began a solo career. Still, Shoot Out at the Fantasy Factory was another hit, as was When the Eagle Flies (1974 in music). Capaldi's solo career began to heat up, and Winwood finally launched one of his own, recording the smash hit album Arc of a Diver. Winwood's solo career peaked with the album Back in the High Life. Traffic did not record again until 1994, when they released Far From Home. After re-uniting, Capaldi and Winwood toured widely but were unable to regain their former stature.

Traffic was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 15, 2004.

Music of the Beatles - Erich Kunzel, Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, King' Singers. SACD-ISO + CD

I've been meaning to say something about this wonderful SACD for years. I love the compositions by Lennon/McCartney but prefer their music best when preformed by Jazz Ensembles or Symphony Orchestra's. So I guess I'm not a real Beatles fan but I sure love their music writing skills.
This is musically and sonically one of the finest SACDs in my collection. Not only is it super cool but it really shows what great writers Lennon/McCartney are, like the Beatles recordings never could. The orchestra playing, the rhythm, the perfect voices of the king'singers and the superb sonics make for some very enjoyable music! I wish Kunzel would do a follow-up recording of more Beatles music, how about a "King's White Album"?

I have had this SACD for over a year and have been able to audition it on a number of systems, including my new reference quality system, and I have to say that the soundstage sounds somewhat distant and narrow, and overall, the sonics are not spectacular. However, I did not relize this until I purchased my new system, and I thaught the sonics were fine on my previous equipment. The modern arangements were creative and do justice to the original Beatles arrangements. The King's Singers, as usual, did an excellent job.

...sonically the recording is excellent, every instrument is its on place, the nuances can clearly be heard, the quality of stereo sonics is high and it really deserves five points. however my system is stereo only and i can say nothing about multichannel sonics...

It's hard to make a biography about THE FLOWER KINGS, being that there's so much to say about them, so any attempt of telling their history may seem insufficient.

This esential Swedish group was born around 1993 as a power trio formed by Roine Stolt (Ex-KAIPA) in guitar and vocals, Jaime Salazar (Drums) and Hasse Bruniusson (percussion), and ex-SAMLA MAMMAS MANNA, this lineup worked with Stolt in his solo album "The Flower King" with the participation of Hans Fröberg (Lead and Backing vocals) who would stay with them.

Soon they decided to form a band using the name of the solo album so THE FLOWER KINGS was born, the keyboardist Tomas Bodin and Roine's brother Michael in the bass joined and the band was officially born.

For 1995 they have their first release ready "Back in the World of Adventures" which impressed the critics very much for their closeness to the style of early bands such as Moody Blues, genesis, Jethro Tull etc, borrowing ideas but not music, so you can easily find their inspiration but a single chord copied, I personally liked the album but found it closer to Neo Prog than to Symphonic but this is only a stylistic precision that has no relation with the quality of the album.

The next few years are prolific with few changes and they release "Retropolis" in 1996. Stardust we Are" in 1997 and "Flower Power" in 1998 with no great changes.

In 1999 Michael Stolt leaves the band and is replaced by Jonas Reingold so the new formation for "Space Revolver" in the year 2000 also includes Ulf Wallander playing the Sax as a guest that remains for a long period with them...

In the summer of 2007, 40 years down the road from the original "Summer of Love", a band from Sweden, The Flower Kings, started planning to tour the universe to spread "the word" in a custom-built Volkswagen bus.
It wasn't just any regular VW bus; it was designed by Russian AquaTouring engineer Ed Unitsky and the general idea was to be able to travel thru time, space, rain, storm, mountains and oceans to spread the message of LOVE!
Now being 2007 we soon realized that we may need a bit of comfort because prog musicians do get grumpy and in the good old prog tradition, the egos grow bigger than the size of Germany, so we all needed our own Prog-turf on the road, a place for each of us to hang our glittering capes.
So we rented a rolling castle from Kaiser Red Car and instructed the Orch-crew to load our Mellotrons, Taurus and kettledrums.
Once the guest drummer from the Crimson Kingdom had arrived and we were assured he was about the nicest chap there is in the music biz, the lot of us started cultivating the musical beast with a frenzy.
Two more American icons arrived, the Mighty "Mercher" that is Mr. Durbuck and a famous sound designer named Mr "DevilEars" (Paul DeVilliers) that had worked with giants like Mr Mister, Yes, Stevie Wonder, Bette Midler etc. so it looked like time to feel small, gulp!
So there we were, in a lofty rehearsal room spending most of the days cultivating the sounds of no evil, tuning Minimoogs and cursing our stupidity in writing way too complicated songs to play live. But hey - who said prog was meant to be easy, or life for that matter.
We had a dream-team on board, so "Shut up and play yer bassguitar".

Fast forward about a week, first show the following day in a kingdom nearby, home of trolls & deathmetalfairies - Norway. Our German Red Castle had arrived with two drivers and the idea was to travel by night to Oslo for a premiere show.
Band on board, crew on board, after midnight, bus rolling out of our town, everyone eager to get a good nights sleep.
CRAAASHHH ! - ( Sound of shattering glass and loud voices in German ) "SCHEIZE - TOUR KAPUTT - KAPUTT !!!"
Rest of band seemed to be sleeping, regardless of noises and german cursing.
I got up - 'cause I hadn't yet fallen asleep and realized thyat we had just hit a young moose (elk) and the windshield of this rolling red fortress was shattered, cracked and all over the bus floor.
So much for "The Tour Of No Evil"...............

....The years leading up to In Step weren’t kind to Vaughan. In terms of deserved critical praise, yes. And in terms of continually hitting giant artistic strides, certainly. But Vaughan became mired in a haze of whiskey and cocaine, getting sucked into a downward spiral that culminated with him collapsing on a London stage in 1986 and coming close to death. After checking himself in for treatment, embracing the 12-step program, and finally kicking his vices, Vaughan returned with a vengeance on In Step, the first record he made sober.

The results teem with intensity, passion, and edge. Vaughan aggressively tears into uptempo hellraisers such as “The House Is Rockin’” and “Scratch-N-Sniff,” grabbing each song by the scruff, shaking them, and refusing to let go. He courageously delves into his personal scars on the semi-autobiographical “Tightrope” and “Wall of Denial,” confessionals that leave nothing to the imagination. A pair of instrumentals and several powerhouse covers round out an effort defined by Herculean consistency, songwriting, and poignant honesty. That Vaughan was killed in a helicopter accident one year after its release only adds to the sense of urgency—and bittersweet feeling, particularly since everything here serves to uplift.

...This disc is a Stereo Hybrid SACD recorded live in Analogue tape(Philips Pro-1951, 2 channel recorder) and Ampex AG-440B recorder, in Chritmas Day 25Dec1974 at The Misty Club, Roppongi-Tokyo, so Tsuyoshi Yamamoto was in a overground playing this night and the audience also was hi in the Club and follow Moaning with claps, people even talk around the stage unceasing.
This album show four tunes in sequence, they are live shots, there is no cut/gap in the tape between the songs, the performances are strait, unhesitatingly, confident, Yamamoto do not wait applause and start another theme promptly, this SACD keep a great Jazz moment from a distant year of past...

Santana - Caravanserai. 2011 - SACD-ISO + CD

This is a remarkable album in the Santana discograghy. I dont own the Japanese version of this title and I always like to compare the different sacd versions.
This new Mobile Fidelity sacd of the classic rock Santana album is a pretty decent transfer. Musically this is simply a superb album by the ever experimental Santana. On this album Santana plays in favor of emotion rather than simple technique. Also the bad's jamming is to create atmospheric and emotional soundscapes instead of the usual latin flavoured rock music. Most of the album is of the instrumental variety and the different sounds and textures are always fascinating to hear and feel.
All in all I feel Mofi has done a rather credible job here. There is a very live feeling with the sound of the music that I like. This sacd has to be played rather loud and the sound is a little on the cool side of feel.........like alot of Mofi titles. At least its not as analytical as some of their other titles. Sometimes the bass is fuller than at other times. The dynamic range is not very extreme due to the recording but there are some subtle surprises here and there. Santana's guitar playing is........well...do I need to even go there?? Its awesome and some of the cresendo's are beautiful and full of emotion.
One other thing about this recording. The music tends to sound a little flat and bunched in due to all the members jamming at the same time. This is not really the usual 70's rock album where there are individual solo's by the certain members. Santana was trying for something different here. A more free fall type of sound where all members are collectivly contributing to the music by playing together. As a result of this .....listeners shouldn't believe that there will be a complete seperation of instruments as per the norm. The soundfield is more homgenized.
On the down side I find the rare instances of singing rather dull and not recorded very well but thats not Mofi's fault.
Mofi did an very good job on this title. And this is a great..great classic rock album from a superb group.

Santana, but with a twist! A fusion of latin rhythms, funk, jazz and Santana's soulful guitar! This is one of my favorite Santana albums - Moonflower being my absolute favorite. Every single track is a masterpiece. The whole album holds together as a cohesive unit and is best played from start to finish and at a high volume. Santana and the band are magic in these performances.
There is lots of depth and good placement of instruments, although a little congestion is present. In my room the sound stage expands to the outside of the speakers. Turn the lights down low and you are there with the band. There is a live feel to the music presented here. Bass is not quite as extented as I was expecting, but the highs are light and airy with cymbols that shimmer and sound like cymbols. Santana's guitar has a beautiful soulful tone!
Great music and a great transfer by MoFi - highly recommended.
Can we hope for Moonflower on SACD?

"Eternal Caravan Of Reincarnation" - the images invoked by the title of the first track and the cover photo really position this album for me. A classic Santana effort, combining rock, salsa and jazz influences. I have the JSACD and the sonics are very good, though perhaps not right up there with the very best. The first three tracks are instrumental, setting up the mood for the rest of the line-up. Vintage Santana with those signature 'aching' guitar solo's, nice organ interplay and his famous conga's.
Check out the transition from "Just In Time To See The Sun" to "Song Of The Wind" - just priceless. Only Santana can take a driving rythmn and merge it into a clear, slow guitar solo like that. The guitar riffs reach for the skies. Gregg Rollie is the voice and together with Greg Walker he is one of the great Santana singers in my view. I cannot tell you how good this album is. Go get it. And I want "Moonflower" on SACD next!
